Although I’m writing this on the warmest day of the year so far (it’s pushing 12 degrees here in Manchester, woop woop!) I thought these photos from the one week it snowed would be quite fitting for this post.
A year ago, if I had woken up to a fresh blanket of fluffy white shimmer on the ground I would have crawled right back into bed. However, this year I was the one grabbing her scarf and gloves and heading out on an intrepid expedition to the local shop. Eat your heart our Captain James Cook.
And the reason behind this change in attitude? A change in mindset.
In the past, I’d probably describe myself as a pessimistic optimist. Deep down I know that nothing can truly be as bad as it seems but, on the surface, I’d vent all of my negativity for all the world to hear. Normally (in jest) comparing myself to Marvin the Paranoid Android.
However, about a year ago, I was introduced to a lifestyle philosophy – The Law of Attraction. In layman’s terms, this theory suggests that we are essentially magnets attracting things into our lives through the power of our thoughts and emotions.
If we’re feeling and thinking positively, we attract positive things and (unfortunately) vice versa.
I’m not necessarily someone who whole-heartedly believes in these things, however, I am always willing to give things a go. I figured, if the Law of Attraction did end up working out for me whether it be down to self-motivation or something more powerful, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to give it a go.
There have been certain instances that I feel might be down to this theory, but I’ll save them for a future post. However, I do believe that applying this theory has led to a shift in my outlook and by incorporating these three changes into my life, I’ve started on my journey to a more positive mindset.
I think we can all be quite guilty of not taking a moment to reflect on our achievements and how far we’ve come. A lot of the time we focus on what we could have done better and don’t give ourselves any credit for what we did well. That’s why I’m actively trying to take a moment to give myself a little praise; whether it be that I did my laundry when I really didn’t want to, or I pushed myself to exceed a target at work. I’m finding that reflecting on what went well and giving myself a little pat on the back is helping towards my self-motivation and my general positivity.
Remove the Guilt
Officer, I plead guilty to all counts of work vomit, excessive chocolate consumption and watching YouTube videos when I should be being productive. It seems like I’m forever spending my days in a perpetual battle of guilt vs reassurance. Imagine two little Beings fighting it out in each ear. One saying what I did wrong and the other reassuring me how little it actually matters. After about a day or two I eventually let it go, however, I can’t win back those hours I spent dwelling on it in the first place. So, I’m trying to detox the guilt side of my brain and slap myself into a more rational state of mind. Yeah, you may have eaten one Lindor too many, so perhaps add an extra rep of squats into your day? Or perhaps not. The Earth will keep spinning either way!
Ever refused a night out or passed up the chance to buy that last pair of shoes, all on the basis of you had no money? Yeah, we’ve all been there. If we rewind a tick to the Law of Attraction, a huge part of this belief is that you must act as though you already have the life you want in order to obtain it. Theoretically – if you refuse opportunities on the basis of lack of £££ - you won’t manifest the money you’re desiring, because you’re acting like you don’t have it! Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that I decided to star in my own version of a Jim Carrey film and say ‘yes’ to a lot more (within reason of course). So, instead of refusing a holiday with friends based on my bank account, I weighed up the price and how much I could save. With a little restraint when it comes to retail therapy and my birthday list literally just saying “money”, I’m in the process of arranging a girl’s trip to Budapest.
